Superheavy dark matter

چکیده
We show that, contrary to the standard lore, dark matter may be superheavy (many orders of magnitude larger than the weak scale). We show that massive particles may be produced naturally during the transition from the inflationary phase to either a matter-dominated or radiation-dominated phase as a result of the expansion of the background spacetime acting on vacuum quantum fluctuations of the dark matter field. We find that as long as there are stable particles whose mass is of the order of the inflaton mass (presumably around 10GeV), they will be produced in sufficient abundance to give Ω0 = 1 quite independently of any details of the non-gravitational interactions of the dark-matter field.

The dark matter in the Universe might be composed of superheavy particles (mass > ∼ 10 GeV). These particles can be detected via nuclear recoils produced in elastic scatterings from nuclei. We estimate the observable rate of strongly interacting supermassive particles (simpzillas) in direct dark matter search experiments. The simpzilla energy loss in the Earth and in the experimental shields is...
متن کاملSuperheavy Dark Matter and Thermal Inflation
The thermal inflation is the most plausible mechanism that solves the cosmological moduli problem naturally. We discuss relic abundance of superheavy particle X in the presence of the thermal inflation assuming that its lifetime is longer than the age of the universe, and show that the long-lived particle X of mass 1012–1014 GeV may form a part of the dark matter in the present universe in a wi...
متن کاملUltrahigh energy cosmic rays from collisional annihilation revisited
We re-examine collisional annihilation of superheavy dark matter particles in dark matter density spikes in the galactic halo as a possible source of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays. We estimate the possible flux in a way that does not depend on detailed assumptions about the density profiles of dark matter clumps. The result confirms that collisional annihilation is compatible with annihilation c...
متن کاملUltra-high energy cosmic rays from annihilation of superheavy dark matter
We consider the possibility that ultra-high energy cosmic rays originate from the annihilation of relic superheavy darkmatter. We find that a cross section of 〈σAv〉 ∼ 10cm(MX/10 GeV)3/2 is required to account for the observed rate of super-GZK events if the superheavy dark matter follows a Navarro–Frenk–White density profile. This would require extremely large-l contributions to the annihilation...

متن کاملSuperheavy Dark Matter with Discrete Gauge Symmetries
We show that there are discrete gauge symmetries protect naturally heavy X particles from decaying into the ordinary light particles in the supersymmetric standard model. This makes the proposal very attractive that the superheavy X particles constitute a part of the dark matter in the present universe. It is more interesting that there are a class of discrete gauge symmetries which naturally a...
